Confined Space Rescue and Safety

First Response Disaster International's practical rescue course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify hazards in confined spaces within an industrial environment. Rescue operators must be able to recognize, assess, and develop a rescue plan when responding to this type of emergency. This program is based on NFPA 1006 (Standard for Professional Qualifications of Technical Rescue Personnel).
First Response Disaster follows OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.146, which addresses confined space rescue, requiring employers to ensure that rescue and emergency services are provided to employees working in confined spaces requiring entry permits. For the construction industry, OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.1211 specifically covers rescue and emergency services for confined spaces in this sector.
Combining classroom instruction, equipment demonstrations, and hands-on field training, this course will provide participants with the skills necessary to safely and promptly rescue an injured or incapacitated worker in a confined space situation.
The following topics will be covered during the course:
• Confined spaces in an industrial environment
• Applicable NFPA standards affecting rescue operations
• Hazards in confined spaces, both physical and atmospheric
• Emergency protocols, sizing, and assessment when responding to a confined space rescue.
• Knots and lashings.
• Mechanical advantage
• Instruction with rescue components, including hardware, safety harnesses, tripods, crane arms, etc.
• Instruction with equipment applicable to confined spaces, including gas detection, air monitoring, ventilation equipment, lanyards and safety harnesses, etc.
